Whether you’re working on a YouTube video, a film, a game or some other multimedia project, great sound effects can bring a sense of realism, humour, and emotional intensity to your projects.

Happily, to get great sound effects, you don’t have to spend hours of precious time or money recording or creating them, nor do you have to hire a specialist to make them for you.

That’s because AudioJungle has an amazing sound effects library busting with thousands of tracks to fit every project.

Here, I’ve complied a list of just 30 of the most useful under the categories: nature, city, weather, domestic, and cartoons.

Nature Sounds

I'll begin the list with sounds that are most often heard in our natural environment. If you’re working on a project involving the great outdoors, you’ll want to have a listen to this list.

1. Crickets

Not every location has them, but they’re great for adding background texture to your night scenes.

2. Stereo Birds Singing in the Garden Loop

Bird sounds galore, mixed with the subtle sound of bees and cicadas in the background.

3. Bees

Nothing like the sounds of bees buzzing in the air to call to mind the lazy days of summer.

4. Seagulls

The squawking and squealing of seagulls will intensify the atmosphere of your beach or seaside scenes.

5. Wolf Howl

Okay, this one isn’t as universally appealing as the others on this list but it is ideal if you want to add that haunting sound of a lone wolf to scenes shot in the woods or if you want to add a touch of that horror movie vibe to your project.

6. Large dog barking

Dogs may not be part of our untamed natural environment, but they certainly are ever present enough to earn them a place on our list of useful natural sound effects.

City sounds

If your project is shot in a city or in an apartment or office within a city, then you definitely need the sound effects in this list as they highlight some of the key sounds you hear in the background in any large city.

7. Noisy Big City Traffic

This track perfectly captures the noisy traffic of a city with many different kinds of vehicles passing by, a traffic officer whistle and car horns.

8. Police Siren

No city scene would be complete without the siren of a police car blasting as it rushes past.

9. Car Alarm

Car alarms maybe aren’t as prevalent as they were back in the 80’s but they’re still very much a part of the city environment.

10. Street Crowd Ambience 03

This loopable city crowd track is ideal when you want to capture the hubbub of a pedestrianised area of the city.

11. Car Horn

The insistent sound of an impatient driver honking the horn is certainly one of the most annoying sounds to be found in cities across the globe.

12. Children Playground In A Park

And to complete our city list, we’ve added the joyful sound of children playing in a playground.

Whatever scene you’re setting, you need to take the sounds of the weather into consideration.  These six sound effects are selected because they represent the most common weather sounds.

13. Rain

A realistic sound of heavy rain falling and hitting a combination of surfaces like trees, road surfaces and rooftops.

14. Wind

The sound of a powerful cold wind.

15. Snowstorm

If you’re looking for a more intense storm sound, the snowstorm sound effect is a better option than Wind above.

16. Storm

Storm is for those times when you need to add a bit of thunder to your stormy weather.

17. Summer Morning Ambience

The sun shining has no sound, but when the sun is shinning, birds are often singing and bees and other small creatures are often buzzing around. So if you want to communicate the sound of summer, this sound effect is it.

18. Ocean Waves 1

Not strictly a weather sound effect, but useful if you want to communicate a beach scene with gently lapping waves.

Domestic Sounds

If you need to add some realism to a domestic scene, here are six of the most useful domestic sound effects.

19. Doorbell

20. House Door Close and Open

A front door being opened and closed.

21. Telephone Ringing

Though mobile phones are more common today, house phones are still very common and quite useful in dramatic scenes.

22. Alarm Clock

Another common and familiar domestic sound is the alarm clock, everyone’s morning enemy.

23. Shower

Shower gives you the sound of water falling while taking a shower. And here’s a bonus sound effect to go with it, the sound of a sliding shower curtain.

24. Pouring Coffee

And finally, pouring coffee is the sound of coffee being poured into a china mug.

Cartoon Sounds

28. Fail

The sound of failure, disappointment or things gone wrong.

29. Magic Wand

This sound that the magic wand makes in fairy tales is handy for any kind of situation where one thing is transformed to another as if by magic.

30. Record Scratch

The sound of a needle zipping across the surface of a vinyl record is now part of the language of comedy to indicate a mistake or an interruption in a conversation after a ridiculous comment.
